Education

University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi — Ph.D. Candidate, Anthropology 2014 University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi — M.A., Anthropology 2012 University of Redlands, California — B.A., Sociology and Anthropology 2006 Yucaipa High School, Yucaipa, California — Diploma 2002 Aiming for a career in academia, I completed a Master's Degree in Anthropology from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM) in 2013. I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. through UHM, only my dissertation withstanding. In particular, I study the politics and poetics of rap music in Mexico City. Before graduate school, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Redlands in 2006, and high school diploma at Yucaipa High School in California in 2002. My academic career has been purposeful and impassioned. After my B.A. I took three years to work in education and successfully enter graduate school. I am now waiting upon funding to continue my dissertation research in Mexico; however, in the interim, I desire the excitement and fulfillment I received as a teaching assistant in Hawaiʻi.

Experience

I have nearly ten years of teaching experience. During my undergraduate career, I volunteered at a free daycare for low-income youth in the Redlands School District. After earning my B.A. in 2006 I spent two years as a substitute teacher in multiple districts throughout Southern California, and three years as a full-time behavioral therapist and tutor at a speech and language clinic in Ontario, California. During that time I also carried out a 12-week, online certification course on teaching English as a second language. Soon after entering graduate school, I volunteered and obtained paid positions as a teaching assistant in a number of classes and departments. My duties as a teaching assistant were expansive, and included lecture design and tutoring. As a self-proclaimed career student, I am proud to say I excel at learning. I have a deep passion for and a strong belief in the benefits of a liberal arts education. For that, I have dedicated myself to pedagogy and to always becoming a better, more creative educator. I believe that as important as making sure student's "know their stuff," tutors and teachers must teach students to be self-motivated learners and thinkers. Teachers must reveal to students the excitement that learning and mastering new information can bring. I believe with creativity and personalized attention, I can show students just that. Beyond the necessary creativity and passion, I believe learning occurs in an organized fashion. For that, I am a reliable and committed individual. While I may take a tangential approach to teaching, I always aim to conduct myself professionally and reliably.

Hobbies

After I became self-aware as an engaged student with a passion for learning, a head full of knowledge, and a love for communication, I set myself on a path within academia toward a goal of professorship. I dedicated myself to the expansive field of anthropology, which studies all things human and provides the complex questions the underly much of the liberal arts educational system. Over the past few years I have shifted from simply learning, to learning to teach. As a Ph.D. candidate, I am no longer enrolled in courses or assisting professors in teaching, editing or grading. Moreover, as I am preparing to conduct long-term field research in Mexico City, the majority of my time is dedicated to mundane grant applications. Thus I have been left with an unfulfilled need (perhaps compulsion) for teaching. My own interests lay in the musical culture of Hip Hop in Mexico City, Mexico. My academic specialty stems from my passion for music. Even outside my research, my hobbies include concert-going and dedication to popular culture. When I'm not reading academic texts, I am reading the latest comic books, which I take to be a form of literature no less important than the classics.
